Small Modular Reactors: A New Nuclear Energy Paradigm

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) closely follows the developments in SMR technologies and prepares publications in different fields in line with the demands of its members. In this context, The Agency has prepared this publication on SMRs and their applications, which primarily addresses the needs of policy makers and relevant stakeholders in line with the demands of the member states. This publication aims to provide the IAEA's perspective on the subject, with the first three sections explaining the IAEA's view on SMRs and the final section devoted to relevant IAEA projects, activities and services to member states.

Broadly, this publication addresses the considerations involved in the decision making on the selection of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and outlines strategies to ensure their safe, secure, peaceful, and sustainable implementation. Various aspects, including reactor and application areas of SMRs, fuel cycles, waste management, decommissioning, and all essential infrastructures are also covered in the document. This encompasses legal, regulatory, institutional, economic competitiveness, and financial considerations.
